Amazon: Stop Forcing Mothers to Choose Between Their Job and Their Children. Provide Schedule Accommodations!

On January 25 2021, Amazon announced to warehouse workers at Chicago delivery station DCH1 that it is shutting down. All workers must now transfer to one of three new facilities or be terminated. However, these facilities operate on an inhumane “megacycle” shift: running from 1:20am - 11:50am four days a week. Transferring means accepting this brutal megacycle shift.

Roughly 80% of Chicago Amazon workers are Black and 15% are Latinx. The majority are women—many are mothers and single-parents with young children. They cannot accept this anti-family shift. Amazon is forcing them, during a pandemic, to choose between a 10-hour shift or caring for their children. Why? So that customer orders placed by midnight can be processed for next-day delivery.

Amazon could easily provide schedule accommodations to its workers. They have offered these accommodations in other locations, but they refuse to do so in Chicago. Amazon continues to rake in profits while workers bear the cost.

We, community members and customers, stand in solidarity with Amazonians United and demand that Amazon provide:

  1. Schedule Accommodations

  2. $2 per hour Megacycle Shift Differential

  3. Lyft rides to and from work

  4. Respect workers’ 20 minute paid breaks
