How We Do

Building worker organization requires commitment and perseverance. Most coworkers are initially scared of doing anything, so at times it can feel lonely and frustrating. Management knows this and they’re ready to scare and divide even further, so we start by building secretly with trusted coworkers.

We connect across workplaces through our Amazonians United movement to teach each other what we’ve learned, share experiences, bounce ideas, and find ways to support each other. There is no secret formula for how to build worker organization, but the following provides a rough, simplified process:

  1. Develop genuine relationships with coworkers based on trust and mutual understanding.

  2. Identify workplace issues that are broadly felt and talk with coworkers about them.

  3. Bring together coworkers who want to do something about the issues. Build a caring community with each other as a group. This is your organizing committee (OC).

  4. Identify which issues resonate with coworkers, make a plan for an action (like gathering a petition) and follow the plan with each OC member contributing.

  5. After the action, talk as an OC about what went well and what didn't go well. Work to improve on your weaknesses and build on your strengths.

  6. Repeat the process.
